Programme Summary:
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is the response of the international community to the long history of discrimination, exclusion and dehumanisation of people with disabilities.  The Convention ensures that the world’s largest minority enjoys the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.  It covers the many areas where people with disabilities have been discriminated against, including access to justice; participation in political and public life; education; employment; freedom from torture, exploitation and violence, as well as freedom of movement.

This programme provides practical information to assist individuals in promoting and protecting human rights for people with disabilities.  The programme aims to assist individuals to realise the Convention so that people with disabilities can achieve the transition from exclusion to equality.  The programme also seeks to raise awareness of the Convention and its provisions, promote an appreciation of disability concerns, and help individuals to understand the mechanisms and frameworks needed to translate the Convention into practice.

We Agree Campaign

The We Agree Campaign is a partnership between Age Concern Help the Aged NI and the Age Sector Platform.  This campaign was initiated because they believe that Northern Ireland needs a powerful Older People’s Commissioner.

The partnership have been working together since Government announced their intention to put a Commissioner in place and have developed a strong set of recommendations that they believe would deliver the best outcomes for older people now and in the future.

It is vital for the general public to send a very clear message to our politicians at this time.  So people of all ages are being urged to join the We Agree Campaign.  Age Concern Help the Aged NI and Age Sector Platform have developed a strong position on the powers and duties they feel the Commissioner should have and are now working to raise awareness and build support for this position.

If you would like to show your support please complete the attached Freepost registration form.
